Abstract:

In Europe, logistics and transportation systems are rife with inefficiencies as almost 25% of truck trailers run empty, the average truck utilization is about 60% and the road efficieny is only 45%, which lead tremendous economic and environmental consequences. In order to overcome these inefficiencies, there is a need to design and develop a seamlessly integrated and synchronized logistics and transportation systems by using advanced technologies and innovative approaches. The concept of “Physical Internet” reflects this challenge. Physical Internet is applying the principles of the Internet to logistics. A global, open, physically, operationally and digitally interconnected network, using a set of collaborative protocols and standardized smart interfaces, in order to send and receive physical goods contained in standard modules instead of packets of information, as does the Internet. The focus of the seminar will be on research into the Physical Internet and its real-world applications.

Short Bio:

Yaşanur Kayıkcı, is the Department Head and Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at Turkish-German University in Istanbul. She received her PhD in Information Business and Logistics from Vienna University of Economics and Business and obtained master and bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering from Graz Universtiy of Technology and Yıldız Technical University. Through her long professional as well as research career, she has worked with well-known companies and institutions. Her research interests are in the area of logistics information systems, logictics technology and management, transport logistics, and logistics system design. She has published and presented numerous scientific and technical papers, books on transportation, logistics and supply chain management.
