Abstract:

The Newton Fund is a program of £ 735 million budget to support scientific and technological cooperation between the UK and developing economies and will continue until 2021. The program, is carried out in 15 countries (China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Turkey, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Egypt and Kazakhstan) in which Turkey also exist. Newton Fund in Turkey is carried out under the name “Katip Celebi – Newton Fund” and is supported by the governments of Britain and Turkey. The main executing agency in Turkey is TUBITAK. Within the framework of bilateral programs, it is aimed to build strong, sustainable and systematic relations between the two countries which will carry out research and innovation-oriented studies together, and to develop existing cooperation.

This seminar is the dissemination of the objectives and goals of the bilateral project entitled “Smart Supply Chain Management Towards Industry 4.0” that is funded under the Program of 1601-2018-2 (TEYDEB) Industry-Academy Partnership Programme-IAPP (Katip Çelebi-Newton Fonu Sanayi-Akademi Ortaklığı Programı). We aim to discuss with and receive contributions from the participants on that focused subject “Smart Supply Chain Management Towards Industry 4.0.” Besides, since this project also funded to increase the “Education Capacity and the Innovation” at Yasar University, we will discuss the adoption of education towards Industry 4.0 mostly for the departments of Engineering Faculties. By following the “Future of Work” concept, “how the curricula at Engineering Faculties should be revised” would provide a significant benefit through innovation.

Short Bio of Doç. Dr. Banu Yetkin Ekren:

Dr. Banu Yetkin Ekren got her B.S. and M.Sc. degrees from the Dept. of Industrial Engineering at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir/Turkey, in the year of 2001 and from the Dept. of Industrial Engineering at Pamukkale University in Denizli/Turkey in the year of 2004, respectively. In 2009, she completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Industrial Engineering at University of Louisville, KY, USA under Prof. Sunderesh S. Heragu’s supervision. She worked as a fellow, for an NSF funded research project for her doctoral dissertation. Her doctoral dissertation investigates design and analysis of a new material handling technology – autonomous vehicle storage and retrieval system (AVS/RS) – using analytical and simulation models. In recognition of this work, she received “the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award” at University of Louisville in 2009 after completing her doctoral study in two years. She also completed a one-year postdoctoral research in the period of May 2011 – May 2012 for a funded contract project with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) at University of Louisville, USA under Prof. Sunderesh S. Heragu’s supervision. Her research area includes design of automated storage and retrieval systems, automated warehousing, simulation modelling, stochastic modelling, and optimization in simulation. She worked at Izmir University of Economics as Assistant Professor for 4 years in the period of October 2012 – October 2016. Currently, she works as an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Industrial Engineering at Yasar University, Izmir, Turkey since October 2016.

Short Bio of Prof. Dr. Vikas Kumar:

Dr. Vikas Kumar is Director of Research and Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England, UK. Prior to joining UWE, he worked as a Lecturer in Management at Dublin City University Business School in Republic of Ireland and as a Research Assistant for the University of Hong Kong and University of Exeter. He serves on the editorial board of around six international journals including International J. of Supply Chain and Operations Resilience, Int. J. of Service, Economics, and Management and Int. J. of Manufacturing Systems. Prof Kumar’s current research focus is on sustainable supply chain management and short food supply chains. His other research interests include supply chain improvement, green supply chain, process modelling, innovation in SMEs, operations strategy, and service supply chains.
